DEV Q&A - DESIGN

DEV Q&A - DESIGN

Who are you?

My name Is Danylo, and I am a Lead Game Designer on the project CW. Long time ago I was Beta Tester in WoT then Video Blogger who made videos about the game. I was always interested in military vehicles and their history; I played a lot of games that were focusing on WW2.

Some people probably would remember the game called Faces of War (2006); it inspired my love to military vehicles even more. Prior to PCW I have worked on WoT for a few years focusing mostly on new vehicles, game mechanics and other things.

What do you do?

My task is to align all the pieces of the puzzle together. This involves all game mechanics and systems from core gameplay to progression, there is a lot of moving pieces in this machine. To make this happen I work with Design Team, Engineers, Artist (list goes on), nothing can be done by one person alone, making a game is a thought process that involves everybody in the team.

As an example, we can take a new Hero, to make it happen we start from the basic idea of what it should be, what is unique about it etc. At some cases we start from whiteboard describing mechanics like firing mode, movement and abilities and only after that we choose vehicle that suits our needs. There is also another approach when we already have a vehicle in mind, and we picked it for being already unique enough, having unique gun, some base for abilities etc.

Usually, it's a combination of those two approaches that result in characters like Ray, Punch and others. This also involves a lot of work from Tanks Team; we do both 3D and 2D concept work for our vehicles to look both cool and believable. Both with vehicles and gameplay features we have a pipeline that start at idea, but even a good idea will do nothing good unless you can try it inside the game, this stage is called prototyping. After prototyping you can actually play inside the game to test it together with a team. Not all features can be properly tested inside the team, in such cases we need actual players to receive proper feedback.

What's your favorite part of the job?

Creating new things and seeing results of your work (and happy players too). Design is a creative job; games are shaped by it and around it. It's creating a whole realm of possibility and this is most important for me.

What's the most challenging part of your role?

Game Development and Game Design in particular involves working with a lot of unknowns, some people can work with unknowns, some can't. I would say from personal experience that you can never be sure what result you will have in the end, especially considering how much thing are involved.

This is also the reason why we see so many sequels/remakes both in video game and movie industries. Making something new is scary.

Which agent is your go to?

I'll be honest here, I do not have any favorites, all of them are fun in their own way, and will be even more fun. Aesthetically I like Chopper (Abrams), Ray (ATR-EDS) and Fantome (Leopard 2FK).
